Sarajevo Named Best Destination in the World by National Geographic Travel Readers
In a recent poll conducted on the National Geographic Travel Instagram page, Sarajevo has officially been named the best destination in the world according to the magazine’s readers.
“Officially: Sarajevo is our reader’s choice winner for 2025,” announced National Geographic Travel on their Instagram account.
This recognition is part of the “Best of the World 2025” list, which highlights destinations that travelers must visit in the upcoming year, handpicked by researchers, photographers, and editors at National Geographic.
The voting took place on Instagram until October 17, with Sarajevo receiving the highest number of votes among global contenders. As a result, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina has secured its spot on the list of 25 recommended destinations for 2025.
National Geographic notes that Sarajevo continues to inspire curious travelers from around the world, emphasizing that the city’s rich history is intricately woven into its natural beauty. The iconic Miljacka River flows beneath more than a dozen bridges, including the Latin Bridge and the pedestrian bridge at Skenderija, which is reputedly built from the same materials as the Eiffel Tower.
The publication further highlights that history enthusiasts can pay homage to the city’s resilience by visiting significant sites like the Tunnel of Hope.
For wine lovers, Sarajevo offers a taste of renowned local varieties such as Žilavka, Blatina, and Vranac. Adventurers can also enjoy activities like rafting, alpine skiing, or hiking to some of Europe’s most magnificent waterfalls, making Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina a must-visit for diverse interests.
